Moon phase

Moon phase timepieces provide a reminder of watchmaking’s numerous and extremely ancient links to astronomy.

It was in 1983 that Blancpain announced a world first in this speciality: the smallest self-winding movement displaying the phases of the moon, the day, the month and the date. This set the stage for a vigorous and lasting revival of moon phase watches, and helped rekindle the interest in mechanical watches generally.

Symphony of gears

The genius of this masterpiece is how all the gears turn, both independently and in connection with each other. The disk that displays the date has 31 teeth.

Day star

The disk that displays the days is a seven-pointed star wheel called a day star, or seven-star. Every 24 hours, the mechanism advances by one gear tooth.

Symbol of renewal

The small revolving moon on the dial symbolises Blancpain’s rebirth and the ancient relationship between horology and astronomy.

Moon phase indicator

The moon phase indicator is run by a 59-tooth star, which corresponds to twice the full lunar cycle of 29.5 days.
